Group Sex
People enjoy all different kinds of sex in different ways. Some people enjoy sex in a group environment. Group sex can be a group of people who already know each other or a group who don’t know each other. All sex comes with risks and it’s important for us to understand the risks associated with the kinds of sex that we’re having so that we are confident and empowered to make the right decisions for ourselves and to look after our health and the health of our partners.
Below are some ideas to consider if you’re going be having group sex.
1. Bring A Friend
Going to a party or group sex venue can be a nervous experience for lots of us. It can be really helpful to have someone else there that you trust, who will look out for you and who will make you feel more at ease.
2. Know what you want
We all enjoy different kinds of sex and it’s important for us to know what kind of sex we enjoy because that helps us set our boundaries. This is especially important in group envinronments. When we are not confident about the kind of sex that we want to have it’s easier for us to feel pressured into having sex that we don’t want to have. Remember: consent is an ongoing process and you can say ‘no’ at any time.
3. Stay hydrated
Regardless of whether or not you have taken alcohol or chems, it’s important to drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated – but remember not to drink from someone else’s cup as this can lead to an accidental overdose.
4. Watch out for warning signs
The use of drugs/chems in group sex environments increases the risk of injury or overdose. Signs of an overdose can be; delirium, difficulty breathing, fast or slow pulse, skin paleness or redness, increased or decreased body temperature. If someone passes out this is an emergency and you must call an ambulance immediately. Stay with the person until the ambulance arrives.
5. Get Tested Regularly
The more sexual partners we have, the greater the risk of contracting an infection and if we’re having sex without condoms the risk of contracting infection is higher again. The best way of responding to risk of infection is to access PrEP to protect against HIV and get tested regularly so that infections are treated quickly. If you have any questions about PrEP, STIs or getting tested contact The Rainbow Project.
6. If you’re not having fun – Leave!
Group sex is something that lots of people really enjoy, but if you’re not having fun, that’s totally ok!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or uncomfortable, sometimes the best thing to do is to leave and look after yourself. There can always be a next time if you want.
