LGBTQIA+ Migrant, POC and Ethnic Minorities Support
The Rainbow Project is working towards supporting the needs of people of colour, migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, international students, Irish Travellers, and other ethnic minority groups. Through a partnership with SSE Airtricity, we have been able to create a dedicated role of Migrant and Ethnic Minorities Officer to offer additional support services for people in Northern Ireland.
For the last number of years, The Rainbow Project has hosted a social group known as GEG (Gay Ethnic Group), this peer-led group was there to better connect LGBTQIA+ people of colour, migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, international students etc across NI.
LGBTQIA+ people can often face double isolation within their communities and the wider LGBTQIA+ community, with no sufficient social safety nets in their life. Through this group, we aim to build friendships and reduce the isolation faced by LGBTQIA+ people of migrant and ethnic minority backgrounds.
We achieve this through providing mental health and well-being services, as well as some support with asylum applications. We also support the social integration of BAME LGBTQIA+ people through organising social activities and outings such as attending sports events, cultural activities and concerts.
If you are an LGBTQIA+ and wish to access support, The Rainbow Project can provide
- -Co-cultural Counselling
- -Gay Ethnic Group social support
- -Hate Crime Advocacy
- -Housing support
- -Volunteering
- -Signposting to other support agencies
- -Asylum process support
